Court told man killed in mistaken belief he was a paedophile
A group of youths were seen hiding in a very park moments before a guy was killed inside mistaken belief he would have been a paedophile, a court in east England has heard.

Lorry driver Darren Kelly, (42), from Basildon, Essex was stabbed to death in nearby Pitsea on October 20th, 2015.

Four individuals are on trial at Chelmsford Crown Court after pleading innocent to murder.

The court has heard a gang of “teenage vigilantes” plotted to ambush and attack Mr Kelly since they believed he was looking to meet an under-age girl for sex.

Off-duty police community support officer Emma Spurr told a legal court she was walking home soon after 9pm when she saw several youths hiding within the park. Some of them was concealing themselves behind trees and bushes. “It forced me to be feel nervous and I planned to get home as soon as possible,” she added.

Chris Carroll, (20), of Pitsea, together with two 17-year-old boys along with a 16-year-old girl all deny murder. The teenagers are not named for legal reasons.

Opening the trial, prosecutor Crispin Aylett described how a girl, then aged 15, had launched a “personal campaign” against paedophiles.

She had previously arranged to meet up with two men she had found online within the hope they can be arrested. Asked why by police, she said: “Because they’re perverts and I don’t think perverts really should be around and I don’t see anybody else doing anything about it.”

There was no suggestion Mr Kelly was obviously a paedophile and that he may have believed he was meeting a adult woman.

On the morning of the killing, over arranged to fulfill Mr Kelly before recruiting a gang to address him, Mr Aylett said. The other defendants as well as a 13-year-old girl are speculated to have gathered nearby.

When he arrived, the group did start to punch and kick him and Carroll slashed the tyres on his car, Mr Aylett added.

Ms Spurr said she saw two males and also a girl suddenly run towards a man within a duffel coat, later discovered to be Mr Kelly. They ran across the highway, forcing an automobile to make a serious event stop.

“When they got to him one on the men produced motion just as if to punch the guy,” Ms Spurr said. “It connected and hubby seemed to crouch forward. The man from the duffel coat started run down the path and the males and also the female chased after him. I heard some shouting, but it really was not clear that which was said or by who.”

She lost sight on the group and would not see what actually transpired next.

Mr Kelly got help from local residents, but died in hospital sustained six stab wounds.

The 13-year-old girl was originally arrested connected with the death but released for free, the legal court has heard.

The trial is predicted to last one month.
